World Generator

The world shown here is randomly generated using a procedural-generation technique that borrows concepts from cosmology in order to create realistic terrain on the surface of a sphere. The world is constructed from a series of spherical waves that interfere to create continents, oceans, mountain ranges, and plains. The waves are periodic over the sphere and are generated using a power spectrum that mimics the statistical properties of real-world terrain. The relief is then sharpened, and this is followed by a basic algorithmic erosion model gives realistic relief to mountains. The spherical world is perfectly periodic, meaning that continents and oceans line up automatically around the surface of the sphere.

The API used to generate these worlds is hosted on Google Cloud Run.
